I got my spin awareness training completed yesterday (3/10/2026). It was a load of fun flying a tail wheel airplane for the first time. I only got to do the taxiing but the Super Decathlon is a fun plane to fly! We did some familiarization maneuvers with clearing turns, steep turns, slow flight, and lazy 8s. We then did some dutch rolls to work on controlling adverse yaw which was easier said than done. I eventually got better at it but I think it would take some more familiarization with how much adverse yaw the plane creates depending upon how much I try to roll it. We then started getting into the stalls by doing normal stalls, accelerated stalls, and then a new one I hadn’t heard of which was a falling leaf stall. We controlled the fall with the rudder at first and then with the ailerons. It was much easier to control it with the ailerons. Then we got into the spins which I had never truly known the difference between an incipient spin vs a developed spin. I now know the difference LOL The rotational rate was much faster on the developed spin and it took more effort to get out of the stall too. After all of that we still had time to spare so we did some aerobatic maneuvers with some wingovers and rolls. All in all it was fun to do and now that I’ve done it I feel just a tiny bit more confident in my flying.
